Kisspeptin is a family of neuropeptides encoded by the KISS1 gene, originally identified in 1996 as a metastasis-suppressor ('metastin'). Its active isoforms share a conserved C-terminal RF-amide motif essential for engaging the KISS1R (GPR54) receptor, and it is regarded as a master regulator of the reproductive axis.

In GnRH neurons this engagement is characterized as producing sustained depolarization and pulsatile GnRH secretion; continuous exposure recruits β-arrestin and paradoxically suppresses the axis.
