LL-37 is a 37-residue cationic, amphipathic peptide — the only cathelicidin identified in humans. It is released from the precursor hCAP18 by proteolytic cleavage and expressed by neutrophils, monocytes, mast cells, and epithelial cells; its skin expression is regulated by vitamin D.

It is a well-defined reference compound for recovery research, characterized for its host-defense and membrane-interacting behavior in laboratory models.

Mechanism

LL-37 is characterized as disrupting anionic microbial membranes through a carpet-like mechanism while sparing cholesterol-rich eukaryotic membranes. Beyond direct membrane activity it signals through receptors including FPR2, P2X7, EGFR, and TLR9, engaging ERK, p38 MAPK, PI3K/Akt, and NF-κB pathways.

It is reported to show a biphasic, concentration-dependent profile and to neutralize lipopolysaccharide.
